windows cannot connect \\server (Error 0x80070035)
I have tried following all the posts with reference to the above and all references to the 0x80070035 error and have found no solution to my problem. My situation as follows: Two HP 530 Notebooks, supplied with Vista home Basic, have replaced both hard disks and upgraded memory. I have installed Vista Business "MAPS" versions. Installed software varies as both are used for different things. One laptop has installed Virtual server as I do Training and use Microsoft virtual labs. Both systems were able to see each other over the wireless LAN, or wired network. As I use my laptop in various locations the wireless network and the LAN are both setup to use DHCP. I was able to connect to all network computers in the past on any network to which I attached. I have on the network a windows server 2008. One day I noticed that this error message appeared. I have disabled both / all firewalls, uninstalled all antivirus programs, uninstalled all applications that are not necessary, all to no avail. The second laptop can still connect to all systems. In network properties I can see all devices, including the routers and print servers, to which I can still print. The complete network map is correct; if I try to connect from the map I get the following message, \\server is not accessible. You might not have permissions to use this network resource. Contact the administrator....... ! the specified network provider name is invalid. I have tried connecting via the fully qualified domain name, IP address and the NetBIOS name, all tell me that I have miss spelt the name. Have changed the local security policy to include both NTLM and NTLM v2. Both network connections are configured as private / business. I can access the DNS and web server (SharePoint) on the Windows server 2008, including connecting to the internet using it as theprimary dns. If I configure a Virtual machine to use any of the connected networks and it can connect to the other systems on the network. I have, I think exhausted all my options, and looks like I may have to blow out and re-install. I am hoping that there is somebody out there that has resolved this issue, as I may bump into it again if I just start from scratch. Thanks to all who may read this

Hi It sounds that you are not corectly authentifying to the Domain Controller. The reason I am saying this is that the Vista Firewall applies the Domain Profile whenever it can see the DC and succesfully logon to it. You say that the profile you see is the private one.Go to start > type in "event viewer" in the quick search and select Event Viewer to launch it. Go to Windows Logs > System and look for any Errors (especially with the GroupPolicy as source)It has also been seen that a computer with virtual network adapters like you certainly have, will encounter problems on a domain profile. That's because the Windows Firewall will apply the Domain profile only if all network adapters are authentified to a Domain Controler.

Hi Youngun, thanks for the response, I have checked the event logs and see no errors in either the system logs or the security logs that show an error. I am at this stage not connected to a domain, i did suspect that this was a security problem so i tried to create a domain and join, buti was not able to jointhe domain as it cannot connect. when trying to connect it shows the security request to join, then fails to join with the same error. I have tried to prestage the computer account all to no avail, soI have removed the ADDS again. Other computers can connect to this server. Other computers can connect to mine without any problems. As explained before a virtual Vista machine can connect to the server and or other computers. I have a wireless network and a wired both have the same problem. thanks again

Let me see if I get this right. From the Vista machine, you can connect to the internet using the 2008 RRAS and the DNS set up on it and you can also reach the Sharepoint site on it but you cannot access the shares on this server? Also, you have tried joining the Vista machine to the domain but you were unsuccesful? How about the other machines?I'm sorry to be so dense but you use the word "connect" which can translate into several protocols, so I need to be sure what exactly isn't working.

From the Vista machine, the one i am now useing, i can connect to the internet, any site, my mail through outlook 2007 works just fine. The server is on the same subnet asmy Vista notebook, either through LAN or Wireless. I can access sharepoint on the local server. All connections to other computers on my subnet useing the unc \\server or \\ip address fail with this error.

Hi I have just completed the reinstall, using the original Vista Business inc. SP1, selected upgrade so all settings are still in place, but at least the problem is solved for now. I am again able to connect to all shares within my local and remote networks. thanks for the assistance.
